How long is Post Graduate work permit Canada valid?

The length of Post-Graduate work permit (PGWP) depends on the duration and level of the study. According to IRCC PGWPs may be valid from 8 months to 36 months.

Eligibility requirements for Canada Post Graduation work permit

General requirements:

  • You have completed at least 8 months of post-secondary study from a PGWP-eligible designated learning institution outside Quebec or 900 hours in Quebec.

  • You have completed all the requirements of your study permit.

  • Your study permit was valid before you submitted your PGWP application.


You need to prove your English language proficiency requirement before applying for a post-graduate work permit. Your language requirement depends on the level of study and institution.


  1. If you graduated with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or a doctoral degree: You must prove a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7, which is equivalent of IELTS (General) overall score of 6 and no band score less than 6, or the PTE Core (Pearson Test of English). reading score of 60-68, listening score of 60-70, speaking score of 68-75, and writing score of 69-78.

  2. If you graduated with any university program: You must prove a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7, which is equivalent to IELTS (General) overall score of 6 and no band score less than 6, or a PTE Core (Pearson Test of English) reading score of 60-68, listening score of 60-70, speaking score of 68-75, and writing score 69-78.

  3. If you graduated from any other college, polytechnic or non-university program: You must prove a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5, which is equivalent to IELTS (General) reading score of 4, writing score of 5, listening score of 5, and speaking score of 5, or PTE Core (Pearson Test of English) reading score of 42-50, listening score of 39-49, speaking score of 51-58, and writing score 51-59.
