In a groundbreaking initiative to increase the security and integrity of the Indian passport holders, and to streamline the international travel, Indian government launches next generation E-Passport, or electronic passport. This is modernization is a significant step in modernizing the travel documents, aligning India with global technological advancements, while prioritizing citizen safety. In Indian passport new design the passport will get a symbol of RFID chip.


What is an E-Passport?

An e-passport or electronic passport is a combination of a traditional paper and an electronic radio frequency identification chip (RFID Chip), and an antenna on cover. The radio frequency identification chip (RFID Chip) stores the passport holder data, including personal details and biometric data. This chip ensures that Indian passports can now been scanned by immigration authorities worldwide, for a quick and secured verification process.

What are the benefits of an e-passport?

  • Increased security: The RFID Chip store encrypted biometric data, making it nearly impossible to temper or duplicate.

  • Faster Immigration check: With new e-passport, Indian passport holder can do immigration checks in less time. The RFID automated scanners authenticate data in no time, making it easy and convenient for immigration officers.

Do I need to change my old passport?

No, the government has clarified that old passport will remain to continue till their validity of expiry date. However, citizens applying for new or renewal will be issued a new e-passport.


Roll-out plan

The rollout of new Indian e-passport will be done in phased manner currently available to 13 Indian major cities:

Delhi, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai Hyderabad, Surat, and Ranchi


By the mid of 2025, the government plans to take this initiative to all the passport sewa Kendra (PSKs) nationwide.
